British thermal unit

The British thermal unit (BTU or Btu) is a measure of heat, which is measured in units of energy. It is defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. It is also part of the United States customary units. The modern SI unit for energy is the joule (J); one BTU equals about 1,055 J (varying within the range of 1,054–1,060 J depending on the specific definition; see below).

While units of heat are often supplanted by energy units in scientific work, they are still used in some fields. For example, in the United States the price of natural gas is quoted in dollars per the amount of natural gas that would give 1 million BTUs (1 "MMBtu") of heat energy if burned.

Examples of use of British thermal unit
1. Global gas prices are currently either linked to oil prices or to the British thermal unit, which is the heat value of a specific amount of gas.
2. RIL‘s delivered price of 5.5 to 6.2 dollars per million British thermal unit translated into an power generation cost of Rs 2.2–2.5 per unit.
3. India can raise the price by 50 per cent to 4.775 dollars per million British thermal unit as against the June 2005 price of 3.215 dollars per mBtu.
4. Sources said the increased volumes would be sold at a price of USD4–4.5 per million British thermal unit, thereby increasing the government revenues from the field.
5. The official said New Delhi, drawing from experience in international pipeline projects, has suggested a transportation tariff of 0.50 dollars per million British thermal unit while Pakistan wants 1.57 dollars per mBtu.
